We are in the Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, located in beautiful Southern California. Our team of 26 lab members, representing 9 different countries, is a dynamic and enthusiastic group studying several different aspects in the field of signal transduction. Our studies focus on the molecular basis of cell growth control and cell cycle regulation; and, understanding gap junctional intercellular communication. Tony Hunter is a professor and Director of the Cancer Center, his laboratory studies how cells regulate their growth and division, and how mutations in genes that regulate growth lead to cancer. His lab has made significant contributions in the area of signal transduction, how signals that stimulate or rein in growth are routed within a cell. Walter Eckhart is a professor and head of the Molecular and Cell Biology Department. He is studying how oncogenes affect cell growth. Adjacent cells communicate with each other through channels that allow the passage of small molecules, in a process called gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC). Defining the relationship between GJIC and regulation of cell growth is important for understanding cancer. Learn more about our research and the people behind the Science! |
